Just saw this on Gizmodo: instructions on how to get iOS5 without needing the $99 Developer account (or access to one)...

How to Upgrade to iOS 5 Today, Without Any Developer Account

(Just to be clear, this is really kind of a info-only post...I really wouldn't recommend using this method when legit methods are only $5-10. That said, if anyone is crazy enough to do it, let us know how it goes!)

I think I may have to do that. I cannot afford even $5 right now to get my UDID activated. If someone here is willing to do it for free - I'd really appreciate it (it only uses up one spot of yours).

But be aware, that from comments so far, if you use the above way of installing iOS5 you will not get any network service i.e. won't be able to make calls, texts etc.

There's a few friendly people on Reddit that are registering people's UDIDs for free - have a search about first.

No, this looks a LOT risky...once again, I really don't recommend it. I've also read you need to do the whole process again every time you reboot/power cycle. That's just ridiculous.

It is impressive, though, to see what people will do to save a couple of bucks. I mean, how did he even discover something so convoluted??

After trying the beta I have to things to say:
1) pay the $5 to try it, it's a lot easier than using the Gizmodo method
2) DO NOT try it on your main device! It is a beta so it crashes, behaves strangely and does all the weird things beta versions do. Install it on your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone 3GS instead.

I've heard this will result in your phone not having a cell connection if you do it on an iPhone, obviously not an issue for iPad or iPod Touch, but still.. If they release an update an this whole is patched you could be screwed. I have dev account slots open if anyone is looking, 8810dls(at)gmail(dot)com or bit.ly/iHQonS

Why risk bricking your phones, or having bugs that you may have to wait weeks or months to be fixed, and have to do this update every two weeks until the Fall so that your phone isn't bricked? It's far easier to just jailbreak your phone, and with jailbreaking you get hundreds more features than you get with iOS 5.

Only devs should be using it, that's what it's for.

True, but the new native features are soo much better than most jailbreak solutions.
