iMessage effects not available when replying from lockscreen?

Effects work when the phone is unlocked and I am in Messages but when I force press a notification and reply to a message from the lockscreen and then force press the up arrow to get the effects nothing shows. I am using a 7 Plus and a coworker with a 7 tried it with the same result. Bug or intentional?

I suppose it's essential. Don't know for sure though. It's the same on my 7 Plus.
