I'm having problems uploading photos on my mini to my desk top

I am trying to upload photos from my iPad to the desk top but I get the following Message: Photos in the Camera Roll mini iPad" cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode. I went to Passcode in setup and entered the code - it made no difference

Why did you go to "passcode in setup" to enter the code. All you have to do is enter the lock screen passcode to unlock the device.
