If I turn on iCloud Drive will it auto "share" everything between Mac/iPhone or can I select?

If I turn on iCloud Drive, will it automatically "store" everything on my Mac and iPhone - or can I choose only what I want stored? I'm of the "older" generation and not SUPER tech savvy. I am looking to be able to share a few photo albums with others by sharing a link. However, I have a LOT of stuff on my Mac and if all is transferred, it would be costly.

iPhone is IOS 10.3.1 and MacBook Pro is OS Sierra 10.12.4

On whatever device you enable iCloud Drive, the contents therein will be accessible via those devices.
