If I remove “messages” from the “always allow” list in downtime, what happens to texts?

I want to use downtime during lecture and I don’t even want to be bothered by text messages. But I want them to be waiting there for me when downtime is over. From the warning message on apple it’s not clear if texts are still received but just hidden till after downtime, or if they are not received at all? (the warning says “if messages is not always allowed, all devices that are using iCloud for screen time will not be able to send or receive messages during downtime. It’s includes emergency contacts.”)
