My screen is totally dark except for the symbols across the top and the options across the bottom.

Take the lens cap off.

After making sure your finger is not in front of the lens ( ), try a hard reset by holding down both Home and Power buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo. Then release the buttons and let the phone reboot (this does not delete any data).

If that does not work then try going in to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. See if that helps.
