i want to free up space on my iphone6 by removing my photos from my device how do i do this

as i understand there is icloud and icloud drive what is the difference between them as ive noticed that my images dont save to the icloud drive only to icloud and would like to free up some space on my 16gb iphone6 by removing my photos from my phone and storing them on my icloud drive

If you use iCloud Photo Library, there is an option called "optimize storage" on your phone where it will manage device space as needed. I'd try that first if you haven't already. If you want them exclusively online, you would want to use a service like Dropbox that has an auto upload feature (you can set it to wifi only). You can even use it in conjunction as an extra backup :)
