I lost my texts when I downloaded iOS 12 on my iPad 2. How do I get them back?

I have turned off iMessage and rebooted no help, I have done a hard reset no help.

Again it just came back on its own. Thank you as I use it daily.

Actually I did a search by pulling screen down from the middle and typed in iMessage and clicked on the response iMessage and they showed up. Thanks again.
