I lost my iPhone and I want the data erased

I lost my iPhone 4S a couple of days ago. The first thing I did was track it using Find My iPhone but no luck since it's offline. I immediately removed the device from my iCloud and changed all of my passwords. Are all my contacts and messages also deleted when I removed the iPhone from my iCloud account?

Did you select to Erase the device whenever it is online? Did you put it in lost mode?

If someone were to acquire my iPhone without me giving or selling it, I would do the following:

1. Contact my wireless carrier to report the device stolen
2. Login to the iCloud website and put the device in Lost Mode along with a message to be displayed.
3. I would keep the iCloud Activation Lock intact because I wouldn't want ANYONE to use MY iPhone without my permission.
4. I would indeed change the iCloud and iTunes passcodes.
