I forgot my passcode put iPad into recovery mode, goes to computer files. How can I save my files?

passcode forgotten, put ipad into recovery mode, goes to computer files

the screen that it goes to is a screen where it wants me to choose a file I chose computer (c drive) program files, iTunes, etc. ultimately it ends up at an empty folder and won't "download" anything. doesn't look like a backup was ever saved on my computer?
