I am getting a capital "E" next to my provider name. What does this mean?

I have tried to find this in a tutorial, but no luck. I can make calls when this appears, but not receive. Why?

E stands for Edge, Edge was the speed provided previous to 3G. When you see E you are in an area where either your network is not covered or your radios are not connecting to the signal. Put in your phone in airplane mode for a couple seconds and then take it out of airplane to reset your radios. If you still see E after a few minutes then your network is not strong in that area.
