How to open up phone to answer an incoming call

I recently did an upgrade on my iphone 5S. I received 2 calls this morning and for some reason I couldn't open up my phone to answer. It said please slide to open but it wouldn't open. Lost my call.

Unresponsiveness while receiving a phone call is the worst. I restart my device when that happens, just to be sure it won't happen again anytime soon.
