how to insert emoticons on macbook?

sorry for the title,i know how to insert them but my buddy on the other end doesn't see them. she gets them but there not yellow like they should be! she gets them like this : ) like i typed them out.
i hope I'm making sense!

there all on IO6 not sure why there not seeing them! i attached a picture not sure if its suppose to be like that,but u can see the icon
is greyed out?
