I need to know if I need cable tv and Internet service or can I just get an Internet/wireless provider

You just need internet. HOWEVER, some of the channels you get on Apple TV require you to prove you have a cable TV subscription before they work. NBC Sports for example and HBO. As long as you have credentials to supply when prompted you are fine. (parents, sister-in-law, ex-wife, etc)

PS Many things do not require credentials or have their own signup and fees, Netflix. Crackle, Hulu, etc
