There are people on the forums running a 2008 Mac with Yosemite on it. So that's 7 years.

When it's no longer working as needed.

Agree with both of you.

I keep my Mac until it no longer works properly for what i need it to do. I use my Mac for;

Social Media, Movies, Music, Occasional Photo Editing. Occasional Gaming.

Every 5 years is about right for me. Unless the battery has deteriorated so badly that its less than 1 hour. Then ill replace earlier.

Currently own a 13" Macbook Pro Late 2011 running Mavericks
8GB RAM, 1TB hard Drive.

I'll use a Mac until it's beyond repair. I use a 2007 iMac everyday for music production. The internal hard drive and optical drive died probably in 2010-11 so I boot from a external drive.
I got a MacBook Air for internet and streaming in November 2014 so it was 7 years between Macs. Ironically I got the iMac in November 2007.
