I only keep about 200-400 on at a time because I don't need all 4000 songs I have on iTunes on my phone at one certain time

I keep everything I have in iTunes loaded on my iPhone. I like to do a random shuffle most of the time. With 32GB's there is no need for me to worry about space and now with 1817 songs, I still have 18.5 GB's left available.

Settings > General > About > and just looks for songs and it give you the total
