As of now, LTE is impractical. I wonder how many are running with LTE left on. Until they can squeeze more battery life out of the chip, then would it be a practical selection.
My 4S downloads at 8-10Mbps and my Z10 enabled LTE clocks at 17-23Mbps. In benchmarks, the lower the ping time, the faster the response web browsing is. At 48-50 ms ping time on 4S, the speed of the 3G makes up for the bulk of the LTE speed; differences are barely noticeable on devices with such small screens.
I've said this some pages back, unless the i5 is hooked up to the PC and LTE is switched on for tethering, then it's worth it. Still, tethering with 3G is fast enough and I can leave it on the whole day and still have power left over.
Thus, the latest is not always the greatest. It is because LTE is the hype of other phone manufacturers which is why Apple is compelled to go along with it: carrier support, Samsung, Blackberry, etc.
It's funny how those harping LTE hasn't said anything about the iPhone 5's battery life if left on.
