iphone 6 was activated but we did not transfer contacts from backup assitant first.

You have external sources like phonecopy.com or try to install an app called phoneswappr on both android and ios. These are the ones i know of, but there are loads of other apps and software, which will help you to transfer contacts from Android to ios. Do a google search

Alternatively, you could backup on PC using microsoft outlook and transfer on your iphone.

Connect the Android device to wifi then use backup assistant to copy the contacts.

Then use backup assistant on the iPhone to get your contacts back.
