How do you close Apps in Multitasking

How do you turn off apps to keep them from running in the background all the time? I did it daily before ios7, now I can't figure out how to do it.

double tap home button -- that brings up "card mode"... tap & hold one or more of the apps you want to close... pull them to the top of the screen... they're closed.
