How do I use my apple gift card without using a credit card

I put my gift card on my iTunes account but every time I try to download an app it says I need a credit card on file

Thats a bit weird, my granddaughter uses only gift cards, for obvious reasons, and all is ok.

I have never given an apple my credit card. I always use a gift card on my iTunes account. I think that I've just bypassed that message when I see it. But it does not ask me all the time.

I have the same thing happen to me as well. When I lost my wallet and cards I got new ones sent to me and before I could use Apple Store credit iTunes had to have current credit card info or i could go no further. I hate apple for things like this but I am an Apple user nonetheless.

If you don't use a payment method like a credit card, you may need to do this before adding the gift card.
