My I phone 5c storage is full and not working properly. How do I transfer my storage from my phone to a usb hard drive so I can erase from phone to gain memory and storage capacity back?

Oddly the easiest way is probably to use a Windows PC (not a Mac). You can copy out pictures & videos from the monthly "directories" that appear when you attach the phone via USB, and copy them to a large USB drive or other mass storage. I have tried a Lightning-port connected storage device that also has a USB port (Not the one in the link above), but it was slow and buggy for extracting photos. Be sure that your copies are readable! Once you have deleted photos, remember (on iOS 8.x) to go into Pictures, then the Deleted Photos Album, and "really delete" them. Otherwise the storage won't be freed. You may also have other apps that have saved data which can be pulled into a PC or Mac via iTunes Sync. Check the Apps details in iTunes.
