You may want to try a fresh restore and only download things you will use. Also remember to close apps running in the background to prevent RAM being eaten up and slowing your phone down.

In all seriousness though, you may want to consider upgrading. The iPhone 4 is coming up on its 5th birthday in June.

How do I stop my iPhone 4 from being really slow?
Apple - iPhone 6

It almost feel bad doing that, but at this point nothing else really can be said about the situation. You're due for an upgrade :-|

It's kind of a double edged sword. On one hand, it's great to get such long-term support for a device. However, after two updates the devices start to show their age as the software isn't optimized first and foremost for them (their chipsets, specs, feature set, etc.).

You don't have to have the 6, even a 5S would be a MAJOR improvement from a 4 and its only $99 to upgrade and the iPhone 4 will trade in for $30-40 to cover some of that cost IF it's in working condition and not broken anywhere.

Phones are basically designed to Need an upgrade after 2 full years of use and the S version is always better.
The S version has all the hardware bugs fixed and updated processor.

Yeah I agree with the others on this one. The 4 is getting up there in age and is working too hard to keep up with the new software

Manage your expectations. You're likely comparing a five year old device against newer devices and expecting similar performance. Speed is relative. If the performance is relative to your expectations, the speed will be fine.

If you have higher expectations, you'll need to determine which is more important to you: your expectations or your wallet.

I hate to say it, but yes it's time to change or accept the limitations of the device. I too have an iPhone 4 32GB, but I purchased it only as a media device (a la iPod), as I actually have Nexus 5 and Lumia 635.
I thoroughly know the limitations and accept them, the device is still beautiful.

It's naturally slow for an iPhone 4 now, like the others said, go for newer options.

If you stick with the 4 for now, there are things you can do to help it run better.
To help your 4 run as smooth as possible, try these suggestions.
1. Leave 20% or more of your internal storage space free. This helps to not constrain the system.
2. Get rid of unnecessary features. Yeah, some are cool, but they will bog down an older model phone.
3. Disable transparency effects. Toggle on "Increase Transparency" in Accessibility.
4. Toggle off "Background App Refresh".
Good luck.

Replace it with a newer phone. :)

Either that or yell at it and tell it to "Hurry up!"

My iPhone 4 is kinda slow too. If you have a ton of stuff on your phone (I haven't read all the thread if this was covered) and have very little free space it can indeed impact performance. No matter what you do, though, the iPhone 4 is NOT gonna be really fast. It's gonna lag and stutter sometimes. It's an old model.

use redsn0w or something to downgrade the system

For that intact-beentsy tiny little screen? Na, no reason to go through any effort for that i4. It was nice in its day but it's day is over except when I'm in a situation where I wouldn't want to endanger my contemporary devices.
