How to retrieve voicemails

Just purchased an I-phone 6. Friend called me and left a message. How do I check for a voice mail.? When I hit voice mail it always says no voicemails

How do you know that your friend left you a message? Are you certain he or she dialed the correct phone number? Anyway, dial your own phone number, enter the voicemail passcode and listen to your message(s).
