How do I respond to iMessages from my iPhone 5s?

Responding to iMessage from iPhone 5s

Someone sent me an iMessage through my email address and it came as a text message on my iphone. if I respond to this person via text, will they be able to get my phone number? I don't want them to have my phone number, so I am unsure if I should respond to the text.

They will have your number if you send it in that manner but you can reply thru your email address if you have it set up in Settings>Messages>Send &Receive
