How to permanently delete text messages on IPhone 6 and IPad air

I used the usual delete functions, but when I next got a message from the same number, the previous deleted conversation came back. I assume that the deleted messages are held separately until the 30 day expiry, but I'd like them deleted immediately to free up space. Any ideas ? Thanks

If the recipient hasn't deleted the conversation, it's not uncommon for it to return to your device when he or she replies.

I've never had a deleted text come back. Try deleting the entire thread, then start a new thread.
