How do I limit the amount of mail downloading from my hotmail acct to my iphone

How do I limit the amount of mail downloading from my hotmail acct to my iphone 6s. It continues to download emails that I have already deleted on the iPhone. I really don't want 1200 emails on the phone. I have the mail acct set to sync 1 day

Make sure you log into your Hotmail/Outlook acct - same thing and check your settings for your server and you can control what stays on the server and when it comes off.
