How do I get inline replies to work in iOS (not PadOS) Messages?

I’m running 14.2 on a 10XR.

Despite what’s shown in the iMore blog post on the new features in Messages, pushing on a message in a group chat (NOT on the avatar, as shown in the blog post graphic, BTW) on my phone doesn’t show a “Reply” option, just “Copy” and “More...”

This works just fine (and by default, if that matters) on my iPad Pro (also running 14.2).

Has anyone else experienced this and figured out a fix?

I’ve already done multiple restarts since the update (two weeks ago), and that didn’t fix it.

Is it possible that one of the string members does not have an iPhone? I noticed that if a member of a string is on an Android device I don't get the reply option.

Bingo! One person on Android. As soon as I tried an all-iOS group, it worked. I guess that I randomly chose an iOS group when I ran the test on my iPad.
