Ipad mini 2 - No full screen when using youtube

My new Ipad mini 2 retina can't play youtube films in full screen mode .
Top and bottom of the screen stays black when playing.

That is a good question! I just activated my new iPad Mini2 yesterday and I noticed the same thing. Even when I played videos directly from the YouTube App. Very curious to know.

I think it's due to the aspect ratio on most videos being 16:9. It'll fill the full screen of a smartphone since most phone displays are that aspect ratio as well. However the iPad display is 4:3, so you'll get letterboxing (black bars at top and bottom) when a 16:9 video is playing.

Yup. That's probably the largest drawback of the iPad... the 4:3 aspect ration that was common in CRT televisions dating back to the 50's or whatever...

Every tv, computer monitor, smartphone, laptop and other brand of tablet uses 16:9 or 16:10, and so YouTube and most movies are recorded and presented that way.

Only way to do it on the iPad is to letterbox is, so that you end up with the entire video, but it is smaller. When watching a movie, an 8" non iPad tablet has the same viewable space for video as the ipad 10.5 does...
