How do i get contact pictures next to messages

have an iphone 5s and have updated to ios 9.0.1 have tried going into settings display and the standed view but don't have the option

Do you have a picture in Contacts for those individuals?

I think it's only works on the 6 and up. Not 100% but seems to be.
