You can't. You would physically need to the device to download the app, if it wasn't natively there in the first place. What phone and firmware were you running?

Hello! Welcome to iMore. You can access: www.iCloud.com and from there you can click on Find my iPhone. You should be able to locate it via the website

Find my Phone was added to the operating system in 2010, so if you purchased your phone before it was added there is nothing you can do. It is not an app that can be downloaded.. it's built in to the operating system.

If you purchased your phone after it was added, it should of been on by default. If you turned it off and you no longer have the phone, there is no way to enable it.

Oh no, so the OP didn't set up Find my iPhone before he lost it?

If it's an older device then the op may not even of had it available. Sometimes when I read between the lines of what's been said I am wrong, but this is just the feeling I got from them asking about "installing" the Find My Phone "app".

Not only that, but even if Find My iPhone is on, if the phone is off, SIM card is removed/Airplane active or not connected to internet (via mobile data or Wi-Fi), it’s a no go. So it’s pretty much a useless feature

As long as it renders the iPhone useless for the thief, it’s a useful feature.
The ‘Find My iPhone’ part of the feature on the other hand is useless though.
