You can hide it a bit by turning mail off in spotlight settings.

To hide it:
- Settings->General->Spotlight Search:
- uncheck Mail

EDIT: According to old Cult of Mac article on this this was fixed in 3.1. So give clearing your trash a try as others have suggested. Remember some email accounts have different names for trash. Look everywhere.

I just replicated this behavior. Clearing trash fixed spotlight search.
