How do I close a text conversation to return to the conversation list on the iPad?

When I click on a new text message on the iPad, it opens the conversation with that person. I do not know how to then close out of that specific conversation to return to the list of all conversations. I would like the screen to the right of the list to be blank once I have closed out of the conversation.

I am able to do this on the iPhone by clicking the back button the says "Messages".

Hi there -

I don't use my iPad for iMessage but I have seen what you are talking about on other iPads. Unfortunately, it will always show the conversations due to the extra screen real estate.
