Flip the switch on the side down. You'll see the ringer go off and the vibrate function will be enabled. (You'll know cause it will vibrate as well).

When you have your side switch to visible orange you also have to select a vibration tone.
Go to Your Settings then select sounds. Make sure that you have you green slide slid to vibrate on ring.
Select Ringtone and you will move to another screen. Make sure that you have a vibration sound selected.

If this is for night time use you also have another option called Do Not Disturb which will silence your phone and it can be set on a schedule in Settings>Do Don't Disturb or if your running iOS 7 just swipe up from bottom and tap on the Moon

Flip your switch on the left side, above your volume rocker. Make sure in your settings under sounds that "vibrate on silent" is selected.
