How can I restore the sound on my IPhone 4S

I recently lost sound while sending and receiving text messages, listening to music and while getting map directions. I have reset my phone several times, checked the settings for notifications and do not disturb and have had no luck

I"m assuming you've checked the hardware mute switch on the side of the phone?

Yes, I have. I've swiched it on and off several times and the ringer volume bar has dissapeared.

Do you keep your phone in your pocket? I had this issue with my 4s one time and found lint in the headphone jack. It somehow had made the phone think the headphones were plugged in and sent audio there. Cleaned the jack out with a paper clip and all was well.
