How can I prevent my MacBook Pro from freezing during the boot process?

My MacBook Pro (mid 2010) battery died a couple of weeks ago. I was planning to give it away, so wiped the hard disk and tried to re-install the os (without a battery). Could not complete the process as MBP would shut down as soon as installation starts. I replaced the battery, since then it fails to boot into recovery. It freezes halfway into the boot. I tried the following options

Tried to boot from USB
Reset SMC
Reset PRAM + NVRAM
Internet recovery : fails with 3403F message
Run health check, also internet health check : failed
Verbose mode: freezes after this message "NVDANV50HAL loaded and registered"
Safemode : failed

Any help out there?

Do you have an external bootable hard drive you could try booting from? Might you have another Macbook? If so, you could pull the hard drive from the 2010 model and connect it externally to your other Macbook, then you could run disk utility and attempt a repair.
