I have quite a lot of photos on my I pad air how can I free up more space without having to delete them

iCloud storage. I use Amazon Photos and Dropbox. The convenience of Dropbox is that you can transfer your photos to your pictures folder on your Mac or PC. You just have to install the desktop version of the app. With Amazon Photos I pay the $59.99 for unlimited photos and videos so if I lose my device or gets broken, the I will always have my memories.
