How can I delete photos from my iPhone 6 without deleting photos from my iCloud?

I used to have a Windows phone and all of my photos went straight to OneDrive and then I could delete all of the pictures from my phone and they would remain in OneDrive. Is there a way to do this with the iPhone 6 and iCloud? I don't understand the purpose of iCloud if what I delete on my phone is deleted in iCloud as well.

Welcome to iMore! iCloud is not a storage solution. It's a back up option. It backs up what is currently on your device. So if you delete those photos, they're also deleted from iCloud. If you want storage, use Box or Dropbox.
