how can i check if my MacBook Pro has a virus

i got a pop up message saying my computer had a virus and i should download mackeeper to solve the problem i downloaded ut but did not run (install) it and after reading your comments put it in the bin and emptied the bin but i can't help wondering if i have got a virus and what shpuld i do about it any help would be gratefully received
