Gmail Calendar

I have my gmail calendar set up natively with my mail and when I had a calendar event I select no alerts but as soon as I save it and go to view it, it adds an alert and email notification. Rather than me going through manually is there a way to change it? Alternatively I've set my contacts up as carddav would doing the same for the calendar eliminate my issue?
