FaceTime speculations

I know none of us knows exactly how the FaceTime feature will work, but I have a question for ya'll who like to speculate this.

From what Ive gathered, its WiFi only (for now) and its also iPhone 4 to iPhone 4.

The videocall that Steve made during the announcement, showed that he called his best bud first and then activated the FaceTime.

So does this mean that you have to use BOTH wifi and cellular network.

Which brings up my next question, do you have to pay for international calls, if you make a FaceTime call from US to lets say Europe? or will it be a free WiFi to WiFi call !?

Well, you are using the voice portion of the your providers network to carry the conversation, but you do use Wi-Fi for the data portion. Yes, you would have to pay for an international call since you are using the voice portion, just like a regular international call.

I don't think you have to call the person first with voice.

I believe that face time it self is some what separate from phone calls. From what I saw from the Keynote, you can choose who to call with FaceTime because it shows who has an iPhone 4 in your contacts.

Similar to how you can text someone without calling them first.

I could be wrong.

As for international FaceTime conferencing , It shouldn't be any extra cost unless you call them first.

Does anyone know how the video portion of the call is routed through wifi to communicate with another specific iPhone device on a different wifi network? Is there an Apple service behind the scenes that is supporting the video conference traffic and mapping the devices?

If you have to pay for calls and make voice call to activate this , I hope for Skypes videocalling feature.

If its iPhone 4 to iPhone 4, that will suck! Does anyone know if for the Evo Qik, which is their video call can video call any cell phone?

what is Apple supposed to do? FaceTime is an open standard, anyone else can use it and make their phones compatible with iPhone 4, and you can bet your ass they will..

And no, Qik is only compatible with other devices equipped with a front cam and the Qik app.

was an accept/decline option because as soon as he hit the
FaceTime button, it seemed like it automatically bought up
the other user. Will there be an option to accept/decline on
the receiving end? I really hope so.

Also... with jailbreaking and the ability to use 3G unrestricter,
we will probably be able to trick the device into thinking that
we are on wifi.

When u use Facetime the iPhone sends an invitation to the on user. Once the user accepts the connection switches to wifi

I'm pretty sure they will have an accept or Decline just like they do for voice calls. What if your friend calls and you just got out of the shower? you answer the phone but decline the FaceTime portion.

What I would like to know is if AT&T is on their knees right now having this over 3G while you're in a call I'm not sure how fast it will be available? I mean they still haven't allowed tethering for god sake!

The 3G Unrestrictor will work, but obviously will be a little more choppy over 3G versus Wifi...

If you look at the FaceTime video , you'll see towards the end that there is a quick view of accept decline on the Asian girls iPhone 4.

3G unrestrictor is the one reason I'm actually glad it's not allowed over networks at first. This means it will be totally free over 3G, as opposed to an inescapable charge.

I am sure you can accept or deny the facetime call. Besides, we only saw it from Steve's end, not Ives end. Who knows. But there must be.

Duvi makes a good point.
As soon as Steve pushed the face time button the video started instantly.this was probably more simulated than the real finished product.
But as I said I'm sure there will be an Accept/Decline button.
