Extremely slow app downloads and updates

I'm facing an issue where app downloads and updates are painfully slow. I don't have the fastest connection over WiFi at home (7mbps) but it's this same connection that I used to use on the iPhone 5S. Now a 60MB Facebook app update is taking 15-20 minutes to download.

However when I try it on my LTE connection (20-25mbps), it takes less than a minute to download. I know my LTE is theoretically faster, but my WiFi still shouldn't take that long even if I get full 7mbps. I tried a SpeedTest to check if there's something wrong with my WiFi but I got the proper 6-6.5mbps results. My browsing and apps are all fine. The App Store browsing is also fine. It's just the downloads that are slow.

Try any of the following:
1. Reboot your iPhone.
2. Go to Settings - General - Reset and then select "Reset Network Settings".
3. Reboot your cable/DSL modem.
4. Contact your internet provider to have them troubleshoot from their end.

Could be a lot of different things, but given your LTE is downloading things at appropriate speeds, my guess is that rules out the device itself. Your home network, while showing normal speeds, can still suffer lots of interference and clogged connections...if your iPhone is connecting to the same network as other devices in your house, it may be getting forced into the slow lane while other things take priority connection.

You could also be having a connection issue between your iPhone and the router/modem...in that case, following D's advice above should remedy your issue.

All things pretty much point towards your home network though, and unfortunately at 7mbps, you don't have a lot of speed to disperse amongst multiple devices (if that is the case at your house). If the iPhone is the only thing connecting, I would then start considering that your router may be getting interference, and depending on what kind you use, there are settings you can adjust to help with that...or it may be time for a new router.

It's definitely not my router or connection. I've noticed that downloads download at normal speeds early in the morning (around 4am or 5am). However they're extremely slow during the evening at around 6pm.

Could be the traffic at that time of day. Everyone getting home n getting on internet. That's my case in the area I live. Internet supplier needs to upgrade their equipment too handle the extra traffic at that time of day. It's getting overloaded with others trying to get on.

Sounds like you either have to many devices connecting around that time or you have some other type of interference. Do you have a neighbor who might be using your wifi? Someone watching Netflix? If your router supports both 2.4 and 5 GHz, try creating a separate network name for the 5GHz one and connect the phone to that. 5GHz usually has less interferences from common household devices.
I have a dedicated connection i.e no shared bandwidth. Also no one but the devices in my house connected to the router. No other device choking the bandwidth. I just checked and I'm getting woeful speeds on the Mac App store as well during this same time. Definitely looks like something's up on Apple's end. But why only for me? :/

Have you tried for the ‘hard reset’ method? I mean press home and sleep/wake button together and wait till iPhone restarts by itself and Apple logo show-up, just with that leave both buttons. Hope it work for you.

Did you ever find a solution?

I'm seemingly having a similar problem. AT&T U-Verse 12Mbps connection / router. Full speed internet access on all devices for everywhere except iTunes App store and Mac App store. iMac is hardwired (ethernet) and iPhone /iPad are Wifi. The iPhones can do fast app updates using LTE or WiFi [on other networks] but speeds plummet on my WiFi. The iMac is perfectly fast elsewhere on the internet but crawls on iTunes app updates or Mac App store. iPhone, iPad and iMac all report 12Mbps or higher using Ookla's Speedtest. I've RESET the network settings on all the devices and RESET the router.

Im having the same problem with U-Verse. Slow ios and mac app store downloads can't figure whats going on. At&t says everything is fine.

Same here with Time Warner Cable in Hawaii (Oceanic). Got the new 300Mbs service and had to change the modem. I used the built in 5Ghz and bridged to an apple express and I still have the same problem.

I know my download speeds on wifi improve after I reset the modem, but its a paint to just reset for an update.

I'm having similar issues and there's no question it is Apple. I can download music on Google and Amazon just fine, but Apple crawls. App updates, music previews, and iTunes Match music just crawl but everything else is blazing. I've tested on 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, and 4 Macs. I've also taken my equipment to 4 different networks. It's Apple. Maybe Apple Music streaming is stressing their network.

Sometimes at about 6 pm PST, the Apple downloads speed up dramatically. Something is going on.

Same story here. I've performed a speed test on my ISP connection with several iDevices (old and new) and found the speeds humming along beautifully. But attempt to stream a song from the Music app without it stuttering all over the place like a hot mess...forget it. I recently switched from 7Mbs DSL (Century Link) to 50Mbs (Cable One) and I suspected Cable One of rigging the speed test results until I saw the discussion here. However, what's still odd is if I attempt to turn off wifi and switch over to my cellular connection when experiencing these symptoms, the music stuttering issues while streaming, as well as the painfully slow app updates/downloads, completely go away. How does that still translate to a problem on Apple's side?

It may be something within the age of the device,or possibly the location of where you live (Some places don't have the best downloading speed for all devices)

Same here, I have tried everything, from switching DNS to Google/OpenDNS, rebooting router, etc. I'm getting 25.71mbps download in the internet health test. But about .2kbps from the iTunes store. Hours to download an app, 30 minutes to download a song.

Streaming Music is no problem for me, but downloading apps and updates are really slow. However, it's not consequently happening. Sometimes it's normal speed as always.

I canceled my apple music because I think it's garbage but it's ridiculous on app downloads. 30 minutes for one song

You mean 30 min for one app? Yeah, I have had that happening to me as well. I think there is something else going on with the AppStore the last time. But somehow it didn't make the major news.

Let's just hope and pray it will be solved soon. Especially before the new iPhones hit the showrooms. It's no good publicity if everybody complains about slow app downloads on their newly bought phones. (And than I mean of course people who made the jump from other brands to  )
