I have a 2017 15” MacBook Pro. I am looking to get an external drive for it. This will mostly be for now iTunes movies that I bought. I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with the Samsung SSD external drive. I know SSDs are expensive, but I’m thinking in the long run they might be better than a hard drive. Best Buy has it on sale for $150 for 500GB.

Also on the other side, a hard drive might be better but I’m concerned about the speed between the external and the internal drives. One being a hard drive and the other being a ssd.

Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated. Thank you.

Also I’m not sure if I posted this months or over a year ago. I’ve forgotten whether I did or not.

I'm personally using a Seagate external drive (photo and Time Machine storage) and I'm not having any issues at all with it.

What about the speed? Is there any issues with that? I’ve looked at the WD Passport ones and there about 136mb a second. The Samsung is 540mb a second.

I think, even if it’s expensive, I think I’m going to have to go with the SSD. I’d get the 1 TB, but that’s $350 and it’s not on sale. If I bought 2 500gb ones, which I’m not going to, I’ll still save $50. I’m buying it this weekend.

I have the 1 TB WD Passport for backup purposes and I think it's quite fast. It's portable, quick to connect, and drag and drop is a breeze with it. I'm definitely glad I bought it.

Bought it today. Best Buy offered warranty for $40 for I think 2 years. I didn’t take it. I have 30 days to decide or return it. If I decide on the warranty than I’ll have to bring it in and they’ll check it out.

If something is wrong during the warranty period it costs extra for data recovery.

That's why you have the same data on the disk and in the cloud....

You can always get a 2.5" drive enclosure and put an SSD in it.
