Does anyone know when the eSim feature will be turned on and how it works. Does one use the eSim as one's main carrier and the removable sim as a travel sim for instance?
After more than 15 years covering everything Apple, it’s with a heavy heart we announce that we will no longer be publishing new content on iMore and the iMore forums will be closing as of November 1st, 2024.

We do know that eSIM only works on unlocked models. If the phone is carrier locked you cannot use dual SIM. As for Apple's webpage about eSIM, it says your main carrier will use the eSIM, or at least should. I'll have to find the link to the web page. It’s supposedly going live with 12.1 update which I think will be released on Oct 30th. And in the US, all three top carriers - ATT, T-Mobile and Verizon - will support eSIM. That’s all we know for now.
One thing we do know on top of all that but can not confirm yet is whether eSIM is locked to the main carrier of your phone. Some believe unlocked iPhones leased via Apple Upgrade Program or purchased unlocked iPhones are not carrier locked. Guess we will know more once 12.1 is out.
