I believe it is a gimmick and if the stories of it selling out are true then I’d like to know how many were sold. Still, I’ve learned over the years you can always find someone willing to make a purchase no matter how ridiculous.

Yeah, I think he was just being funny making his point. I don't have any use for a whistle at any price. I think I still have my Boy Scout whistle somewhere.
