Does the iPod Touch 5 need a computer to work or update or sync?

I want to give my unused iPod Touch 5 to a friend who has an Ipad 4 but no computer...Can she use it or will she need a computer in order to set it up or update it or sync it with iTunes etc? How could she do this using an ipad, if possible?

She can use the iPod touch no problem, but obviously won't be able to sync. iCloud makes a lot of that unnecessary as she can still download apps, music, etc., from the App Store. She can also back it up using iCloud backup, so no worries.

Any existing music, ripped from CDs, for example, wouldn't be available.
