I'm about to buy an unlocked iPhone 7 Plus from someone, and I just want to confirm that the A1661 model has the Qualcomm chip, and the A1784 has the Intel chip. Is this correct?
Yes, sounds right! ? I don't think Apple has confirmed anything but that's "the word on the street"?
As far as I know, Apple limits the "better" chip to the results of the "lesser" one ? so really it doesn't matter?
I heard that about speed, but I thought that the Qualcomm got better reception than the Intel. Is this not correct?
I'm sorry, I don't know.
I can't find the iMore article with the reference, but you can take a look at this. https://www.techwalls.com/iphone-7-plus-model-differences/
It seems to jibe with what I recall reading (somewhere) on iMore -- the biggest appreciable difference being the inclusion of support for most CDMA bands on the A1661 version.
Thanks! I saw something similar here http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/ but it doesn't list the Qualcomm versus Intel chips.
Being bored sitting at my desk, I Googled it and found http://cellularinsights.com/iphone7/ which states that there are "two distinct RF SKUs, one limited to GSM/WCDMA/LTE support (A1778, A1784), powered by Intel’s modem, and one with GSM/CDMA/WCDMA/TD-SCDMA/LTE support (A1660, A1661) powered by Qualcomm’s modem."
Another http://fortune.com/2016/10/20/apple-iphone-7-qualcomm-intel/ that I found said that "The results showed that, nearly across the board, the iPhone 7 with the Qualcomm modem made stronger connections to the network that the Intel-toting model. On average, the Qualcomm chip outperformed the Intel chip by 30%. At the extreme, in the weakest signal simulation, the Qualcomm chip performed 75% better." This link http://appleinsider.com/articles/16/10/20/qualcomms-iphone-7-plus-modem-beats-intel-modem-in-areas-with-weak-signal seems to confirm that.
Since I live in a fringe area I guess it is good that I got the A1661 model which appears to have the Qualcomm chip!
Sounds like you're sorted then.
My 7 Plus is the A1784. I've had no issues at all with signal or speed, even when I've been poor reception areas. Sometimes I think a recommendation based on specs can be a little picky. A difference that makes no difference isn't really a difference. Lol
I heard that about speed, but I thought that the Qualcomm got better reception than the Intel. Is this not correct?
Just slightly better in signal strength and speed based on what i read.
My iPhone is A1661 unlocked Verizon model that i use on At&t with no issues what so ever.
60/61 Qualcomm chip and 78/84 has intel chip
