Does ApplePay work offline?

That's an interesting question. What if you're out in the back of beyond and there's no signal. Hadn't thought of that.

Or would airplane mode cut off the nfc antenna? Turn off data then.

It should totally work offline. It should be much like how our Canadian Visa cards work with the touch and pay systems here. The NFC chip communicates with the retailor's VISA machine and sends the info to the VISA machine which is online. The VISA card with NFC is never actually online and connected to the internet.

It most likely does. All that is being transferred to the machine is the secret code, or so I assume. Nothing is stored in your phone and therefore nothing is being sent via that phone. The amount is being sent by the place in which you purchased the item. That is how it is done here anyway.

Softcard does not work offline, but Google wallet does. No idea about Apple Pay though

I used it in a low signal area where I was on 2g and it worked fast as I could put my finger on touch id.
