Does anyone know if the handoff/continuity feature works with an iPad 3?

Does anyone know if the handoff/continuity feature works with an iPad 3? I get phone calls and text messages but was wondering if the feature that lets you for example start an email or text on one device and pick it up on the other device. I updated my iPhone 6 and iPad 3 to 8.1 but can't seem to get that feature to work

Continuity features are available on iPhone 5 or later, iPad (4th generation), iPad Air, iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina display, and iPod touch (5th generation).
