Does anyone else have to wake their iPhone XS Max in order for it to charge?

Interestingly it may explain why there have been more returns this cycle. After some reading on Reddit I noticed there are a number of people having the issue. One fix seems to be going into Settings -> Face ID and Passcode -> turn on USB accessories. Not sure if this actually works since mine doesn’t seem to be affected. USB goes to sleep after an hour of the phone being idle so I may have to put it down and switch to the iPad for a while tonight to test this theory and see if I can replicate it. If it happens then it’s because of the accessory toggle.

I just saw Talliosive Tech address this on YouTube today. It does seem to be related to that USB accessory toggle. Evidently it is a security feature - if the phone is stolen it can’t be “force broken into” with a method that uses a USB device. It is supposed to not kick in until the phone has been asleep for an hour or more, so this is a glitch. Apple should address it in an update to iOS 12 hopefully.

I haven’t had the issue. But I don’t use the brick that came in the box to charge. I use either my iPad brick for fast charging or the wireless charger I have on my nightstand. Some seem to think it just happens with the standard brick. But apparently some folks here have had it happen with other charging methods too?

Mine has the issue. Noticed it a few days ago as I normally use a wireless charger. Thought it was my lightning cable at first. :(

I just returned from my Genius Bar appointment and the Apple Store employee told me it's not a hardware issue but a software issue that is known and will be patched "in a week or two". He said just keep turning on your display when you need to charge the phone up.

"In a week or two", Apple needs to patch that immediately. NOT in a week or two.

I have no issues with this. I use a wireless charger and cord while at work or In the car and it charges fine.

Yes, this charging issue is only affecting "some" Xs Max's. I'm not having any problem either but I still want it to work right for everyone so the naysayers will be quiet...LOL

Funny how every year there has to be a “gate”. But when Samsungs phone has a problem no one even brings up “gate” LOL

At least our phones were never used as grenades

Go to Settings>Face ID and Password>USB Accessories. Turn this off, reboot the phone. Apple implemented this to keep unlawful access to the device if it has remained idle for an extended period of time.

From Apple Support: If you don’t first unlock your password-protected iOS device—or you haven’t unlocked and connected it to a USB accessory within the past hour—your iOS device won’t communicate with the accessory or computer, and in some cases, it might not charge.

Lew never once mentions this in his unbox therapy video, and only talks about it on twitter after he was called out for not knowing about it. He says it still won't charge with it turned off, and that is total BS. He can't admit to being an ***** and not knowing about this feature so he'll let the video stand because bashing Apple easily gets him the most hits on his channel.
