hey guys i need ur opinion. Im buying the iphone 5s with at&t and now in a few weeks il be travelling. Do you think they will be able to unlock it for me and will they allow me to use it abroad?

As D said, if you buy it outright from Apple, it'll come unlocked. If you buy it at a subsidized price from AT&T then it's a toss up if they'll unlock it for you. Especially within the first days of buying it.

They will, they are required by US law to unlock your device for international travel. But AT&T works in most other countries.

Not necessarily. They'll unlock his iPhone if his account is in good condition, but that's the only way they'll unlock it. Just make sure to pay your bills!

Absolutely not if bought subsidized. Instead they will tell you about their awesome roaming plans. Went though this exact thing when going to Canada for a week once, and ended up getting a third party unlock much cheaper. (They have gone up in price since but might still be a better deal.)

I have a subsidized AT&T iPhone 5s. I did an online chat and told them that I was going to be traveling for work and needed to get my phone unlocked. They put in an order and a couple hours later, I had an email saying that it was approved.
I know it is a toss up on whether they will do it but any time I ask AT&T for something, I always mention that I've been a loyal customer since 2007 and have always paid my bill on time. I don't know if this helps but they have always accommodated me and my requests.
